“Love and Theft” Review

Instantly the bright colours entice the viewer to fixate their eyes on the morphing character centred within the video. The morph, colours, character and music has a hypnotic effect, the viewer struggled to take their eyes off of it.

There are a range of characters that are included in the morph; from humans to superhero’s to animals and robots. The viewer finds the concept quite amazing, as they would imagine how difficult it would have been to morph one character with completely opposite features into another one.

The most obvious effect is the range of colours, they are all very bold and in some sense complementing each other. The yellow and blue complement each other in a cooling effect, they are not too bright nor harsh – they are just subtle enough for the viewer to be able to concentrate on everything that is going on.

Some of the characters are ones who the audience will recognise, in which makes the film a lot more entertaining. One of he first characters the viewer can recognise is a Spider-Man look a like. Despite most characters being very strange looking, the viewer feels as though there is a horror element to it. The morphing of the characters become quite uncomfortable as they become more and more distorted.

Overall, the viewers feeling towards this film is: more than anything it is just very satisfying to watch. The more it is watched, the more that is seen. The smoothness of the morphing plays a huge part in that. If the morph’s were slower or glitchy it would not have the same effect. Once again, the film is so satisfying that by the end you either want to see more of it or to watch it again. A morphing success in the viewers opinion.

“Rooty Toot Toot” Review

Monthly Film Bulletin, London. Issue 216 Volume 19. Published January 1st 1952 by British Film Institute.

The first paragraph explains the overall summary of the story and outcome. There was also a crossover in terms of how realistic the court hearing ended “is herself led away, as tradition demands, to jail.” This is something we do not always see in cartoons however within Rooty Toot Toot they show us how it connects with the real worlds law and justice system. If someone was to commit the same crime the likelihood is they would be taken off the jail. Therefore we feel mentioning that adds an element of reading between the lines.

They then expressed how “successful” and “enterprising” the cartoon was out of the ones seen by that group. This then lead on to stating the cartoon had “incisive wit and elegance”. The audience may agree’s with this not only for the fact that the cartoon was made in the fifties but also the characters, music, colour choice and design could be seen as very sophisticated, fictionally and non-fictionally.

The style of drawing is also mentioned, stating “emphasising detail rather than merely filling the screen”. As the audience can tell, the viewer had noticed the amount of detail put into the drawings, and the colours used to show different character. The audience may feel as though it is very important to mention drawing styles and colours within a review as colour and the unusual drawings can catch the eye of the viewer quite easily.

Terms such as “Clever Ballistic Movements” & “Sophisticated” are just some of many in which the person reviewing describe the cartoon – The audience may agree with those terms not just because they fit the cartoon in an obvious way but also the fact that for its time, the cartoon is more than relevant.

“Duck Amuck” Review

duck amuck

This review will contain the viewers thoughts on the video “Duck Amuck”.

The viewer feels as though the video is both an orthodox animation and an experimental/abstract animation. The reason for this is, that it follows the normal characteristics such as a main character (Daffy Duck), humour, the stories problem and its solution.

However in terms of it being quite abstract;  the viewer see’s at the end, the pencil was controlled by another Looney Tunes character – Bugs Bunny. Now that is only seen at the end, therefore the views have no clue who was controlling the pencil. That process is not normal practice for the Looney Tunes Cartoons, especially to be narrated like that. Both the orthodox and abstract style play hand in hand and complimented the animation in a good way.

In terms of colours, they compliment each other quite nicely, the boldness of them gives the film an enticing feel to it. In some scenes we see Daffy on a blank white background, in which we feels as though this is a good thing as the viewers eyes get a small break from the bright colours seen is the other parts.

This film is definitely full of humour, even the smallest of situations that happen within the film causes a small giggle. For example in one scene the audience see’s Daffy Duck dressed in an Hawaiian outfit on a beach with palm trees within the background. The audience then see’s Daffy Duck walk onto a blank white background and jump due to the shock. The viewer feels, that alone causes you to laugh as it was not expected.

Overall the viewer feels the film was made in an extremely smart way in terms of its concept. Having another looney toons character control the main character and only finding that out at the end is funny and very enjoyable to find out as the viewer may ask them self who is controlling the pencil part way through the film, giving the film a element of suspense.

“My Dad” Review

This review will contain the viewers thoughts about the video “My Dad”.

From the on set, this film has been made using stop motion drawing, in which the viewer applauds Marcus Armitage for using, as it is not always the easiest method to use.

With the narration of a child, it was clear everything said or seen is through his point of view

There was a large man in the crowd with “EDL” written on his chest, which could imply the video may be quite political. Following the possible political theme, the terms “too many immigrants”, “god save the Queen” and “not enough jobs” are used throughout the video which can relate to some of the most recent news stories regarding immigration and Brexit. Making a video relating to current political problems can be very rewarding in putting across a message however it could also offend others who watch it, even though that would not of been his intention.

Throughout the video the viewer saw multiple situations where it seemed very tense or turns violent such as the fight between two racial groups, ending in one person getting wounded. The viewer feels as though that was done to show how extreme some situations can be regarding racial and political issues in modern society.

The constant repetitiveness of terms also makes the video ‘poem’ like, as if Marcus was using spoken word to put across his message, in which the viewer felt is a more gentle way in talking about his topic rather than just being stated and read in a documentary style.

The colours used are quite harsh and bright which could show the seriousness of the topic and how certain elements need to stand out. Sound effects such as the paper tearing gives you the idea it relates to newspapers and the news, which then ties in with what the narrator is saying.

Overall the viewer felt as though Marcus Armitage kept everything relevant to modern society and its problems, relaying it in a way that can be seen through a child’s eyes. Hearing and seeing the constant “My Dad Says” may seem to be his dad protecting him, but nearer the end the viewer saw that his dad may be doing the complete opposite, in a mental and physical way. By the Dad teaching his son his own political views, it has stopped him from accepting and enjoying other cultures which clearly doesn’t sit well with his son. To conclude the viewer feels as though this animation was one that is relevant to the times and can inform you of how a society can operate during political hardship.
